The name Mayacatl is inspired by a pre-Hispanic king named Acatl who created a kingdom of peace, wisdom, and artistic proliferation. An icon of his legacy was his release of birds and butterflies from atop the Mayan temples. In the Mayan culture, butterflies represent resurrection and eternal life and are considered a symbol of love and rebirth.
Butterflies are generally called papalotl. The morpho butterflies, which exhibit a beautiful shade of blue, were identified with the name of matlalpapalotl, which means precious butterfly or turquoise butterfly.

Mahahual is a charming village of several hundred residents on the Caribbean shores of Costa Maya.
Today Mahahual is the second most important cruiseship port in Mexico. It’s main activities include tourism, sport fishing, and diving. Banco Chinchorro, a worldclass diving destination, lies just offshore.
Mahahual’s comparatively remote location is one of its most desireable features, though it is only one hour east of the famed Laguna Bacalar and two hours from Chetumal, the thriving capital city of the state of Quintana Roo.
Costa Maya lies near the epicenter of the Mayan civilization, surrounded by the ancient remnants and cur rent incarnations of the Mayan culture.
